This resource is designed as a decodable text for older readers (Year 4 – Year 8). It focuses on Slugs and Snails (minibeasts) and contains information about the differences between the bugs and some non-fiction information about them.

Focus Phonemes and Graphemes:

It has a particular focus on long /ā/ sounds, represented by ‘ai’ and ‘ay’.

Please note:

  • This decodable text is designed to complement the Phonics International scope and sequence, targeting students who have acquired the phoneme-to-grapheme correspondences introduced in units 1-5 of the program. Students will also require some knowledge of how to break words into syllables and syllable-breaking patterns.
  • This decodable text also aligns with the New Zealand Ready to Read Phonics Plus Scope and Sequence used in many schools. The focus phonemes-to-graphemes in this text align with the Māhuri phase, drawing on knowledge from multiple units.
  • We would suggest using this text with students working within the Māhuri phase, for the best alignment and practice of previous skills learnt.
