Samoan Language Week Activities and Resources
Samoan Language Week is held in 2024 from Sunday 26 May – Saturday 1 June.
I’ve put this blog post together to highlight our Samoan Language Week Activities. Samoa Language Week – Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa is a fantastic event held each year to celebrate the language and culture of Samoa. “Ma’au i lou ofaga; maua’a lou fa’asinomaga, Keep your identity alive, to thrive.” Did you know, the Samoan ethnic group is the largest of New Zealand’s Pacific populations in NZ with over 144,000 people of Samoan heritage?
Gagana Samoa – Samoan Language
Gagana (pronounced ‘nga nga na’) is the Samoan word for language. Gagana Samoa is one of five Polynesian languages (along with Tuvaluan, Tokelauan, Pukapukan and Niuafo’ou) which make up the group of Samoic languages. It is also similar to other Polynesian languages such as te reo Māori, lea faka-Tonga, vagahau Niue, ‘olelo Hawai’I, and Te reo Kuki Airani (Cook Islands Maori). The Samoan language is the third most commonly spoken language in New Zealand, after English and te reo Māori.
