This resource is designed as a decodable text for older readers (year 4 – Year 8). It focuses on how we can reduce the amount of waste we produce.
 
Focus Phonemes and Graphemes:
It has a particular focus on:
  • /s/ phoneme, represented by ‘s’, ‘ss’, ‘ce’, ‘se’ and ‘c’
This resource contains:
  • Decodable text ‘Recycling’ student version – in normal and large text
  • Decodable text ‘Recycling’ teacher version – with focus sounds highlighted and non-decodable words identified
  • Extensive teacher notes outlining alignment with popular scope and sequences, focus phonemes and graphemes, non-decodable vocabulary
  • Follow-up activities focusing on:
    • comprehension
    • oral practice
    • focus phonemes and graphemes student worksheets
    • printable double-sided flashcards with focus phonemes and graphemes,

Please note:
  • This decodable text is designed to complement the Phonics International scope and sequence, targeting students who have acquired the phoneme-to-grapheme correspondences introduced in units 1-5 of the program. Students will also require some knowledge of how to break words into syllables and syllable-breaking patterns.
 
  • This decodable text also aligns with the New Zealand Ready to Read Phonics Plus Scope and Sequence used in many schools. The focus phonemes-to-graphemes in this text align with the Rākau – Tree phase, drawing on knowledge from multiple units.
