Suffix Spelling Rules: A Complete Teaching and Practice Unit for Year 3-5

NZ$9.99

Description

Our comprehensive, no-prep Suffix Rules pack has everything you need to explicitly teach the three core suffix rules, perfectly aligned with the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum. This resource is designed to meet Phase One, Year Three and Phase Two, Year Four and Five English Curriculum: Writing – Transcription Skills – Spelling.

We provide a clear, structured approach to help your students master the rules for doubling the final consonant, dropping the final ‘e’, and changing ‘y’ to ‘i’. While the English curriculum spreads these three rules over three years, we believe you could teach them from Year 3 onwards.
What’s Included?

Aligned with the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy:
This resource is built on the evidence-based principles of the Science of Reading and a Structured Literacy approach. Instead of asking students to simply memorise spellings, we provide the tools to explicitly and systematically teach the morphological rules that govern them.
  • Explicit Instruction: Our ready-to-use teaching slides allow you to directly teach each suffix rule. We leave no room for guessing, ensuring every student understands the why behind the spelling change.
  • Systematic and Cumulative: The resource is designed to be taught in a logical sequence. Students master one rule before moving to the next, with practice activities and task cards that allow for cumulative review of all three rules.
  • Focus on Morphology: By teaching suffixes, you are building your students’ morphological awareness. This critical skill enhances both decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) by helping students understand how word parts work together to create meaning.
This structured approach moves beyond rote learning to build deep, transferable spelling knowledge that will stick with your students.

Phase One Year 3 – Writing – Transcription Skills – Spelling:

Phase Two Year 4 – Writing – Transcription Skills – Spelling:

  • practices: Adding a vowel suffix to one-syllable CVC words by doubling the final consonant (e.g. ‘hop’ ➝ ‘hopping’)

Phase Two Year 5 – Writing – Transcription Skills – Spelling:

  • practices: Either keeping the ‘y’ or changing to an ‘i’ when adding a suffix
