Content aligns with Phase 1 NZ Mathematics and Statistics knowledge and practice standards.

This comprehensive presentation is divided into two distinct phases to grow with your students’ abilities throughout the school year:

Perfect for the beginning of the year, these slides focus on numbers 0–15 and basic number sense.
  • Skills covered:
  • One More / One Less (+1, -1).
  • Number recognition and writing the number word.
  • Finding numbers on a number line (0–10 and 0–20).
  • Comparing quantities: “Is this number bigger than X?”.

2. The First Year (Advanced Skills)
As your students progress, the slides introduce larger numbers (up to 100) and more complex concepts, such as place value and basic operations.
  • Skills covered:
  • Place Value: Counting groups of ten and using base 10 blocks (tens and ones).
  • Operations: Doubling and Halving numbers (e.g., Double 4 is 8; Half of 6 is 3).
  • Making Ten: Using Ten Frames to visualise “friends to 10”.
  • Algebraic Thinking: Solving simple addition equations (e.g., 40 + __ = 43).
  • Rational Numbers: Understanding that a whole can be divided into halves.

  • Curriculum Aligned: Content aligns with Phase 1 Mathematics and Statistics knowledge and practice standards.
  • Visual Learning: Utilises number lines, ten frames, and base-10 block visuals to support different learning styles.

How to Use: Use one slide per day as a class warm-up. Have students answer verbally, write answers on mini-whiteboards, or discuss the answers with a partner.
