This resource contains 8 independent activity sheets designed for Year 5 students to practice literacy skills autonomously. These tasks are structured to provide student agency and to allow teachers to work with other groups without frequent interruptions.
 
Please note: We’ve included a version with “Year 5” in the heading and a version without it.

Activity Sheet Components
Each sheet includes a variety of tasks that integrate traditional literacy with modern tools:
 
Reading Response: Students engage with fiction by analyzing character motivations and listing events. Non-fiction tasks require critical thinking, such as identifying author purpose and evaluating information.
 
Critical Thinking Tasks: These tasks link to the NZ English curriculum and involving verbal reasoning, evaluating language and comparing how people, places, or ideas are represented.
 
Spelling Activities:
We have included a set of curriculum-linked word studies aligned with Phase Two (Year 5) requirements.
This includes spelling words with:
  • prefixes (semi–, sub–, multi–, pre–)
  • <eigh> representing /long a/
  • <ie> representing /long e/
  • <ough> representing /long o/
  • <ue> representing /long u/
Creative Tasks: Students are challenged with high-interest design prompts, such as an invisble bike, a pre-thinking backpack, and life inside a glacier.
 
Writing Skills: Exercises move beyond basic grammar to include a technical focus on expanding sentences using adverbial phrases and appositives, conjunctions, independent and dependent clauses, and correct punctuation for direct speech.
 
Writing Prompts: Prompts are designed to stimulate Year 5 level writing. Each sheet contains two prompts so students have a choice.
