Handwriting Practice Slides – New Zealand Basic Script and Cursive (Years 7-8)
NZ$7.50
Description
This advanced handwriting instructional slide package is designed for Year 7 and 8 (phase 3) students to bridge the gap between basic letter formation and the development of a mature, efficient writing style. Focused on building speed and high-level vocabulary transcription, these slides are the final step in achieving complete handwriting automaticity.
Note: These slides are also featured across our Daily Literacy Review Slides (Phase Three Set 1-4)
Slide Deck Features: 52 phase one slides:
1. Advanced Script Refinement
The Phase 3 slides revisit motor-pattern groups with an emphasis on precision and speed for senior students:
- Movement Families: Structured practice for the Rounded ‘c’ group, Straight Down group, and Slant/Horizontal groups to ensure foundational mechanics remain fluid at high speeds.
- Numeral Precision: Finalised modeling for numerals 0–9, ensuring clarity in mathematical and scientific recording.
- Verbal Prompts: Shortened, sophisticated prompts to refine the “pencil path” for complex characters.
2. Senior Cursive and Joining Mastery
A significant portion of Phase 3 is dedicated to the cursive style, helping students develop the stamina required for secondary school:
- Diagonal & Horizontal Joins: Explicit slides showing how to link letters from both the baseline and the top (e.g., ac, de, hi, row, wo).
- Non-Joining Identification: Clearly identifying “break” letters that do not join (such as z, j, p, y, q, g, b, s) to maintain legibility.
- Join-to-Cursive Sequences: Practice specifically for letters that are joined to, but do not join on to others.
3. Tier 2 Vocabulary and Dictation
- Academic Language Practice: Unlike earlier phases, these slides use Tier 2 Vocabulary for transcription practice (e.g., consistent, available, benefit, analysis, motivation, individual).
- Complex Dictated Sentences: Functional practice sentences designed for older students, such as “Worried wombats write letters” or “Older otters open odd oysters”.
Curriculum Links: Years 7–8
These slides directly support the Transcription and Writing Process objectives in the Year 7 and 8 New Zealand English Curriculum.
- Developing Style and Tone: As students learn to make revisions to the “style, features, and tone” of their work, these slides provide the physical means to write with a “legible, individual style.” Mastering cursive joins allows students to develop a mature hand that balances speed with clarity.
- Stamina for Multi-Paragraph Texts: The curriculum requires students to write “multi-paragraph texts for specific purposes” and “organise ideas logically.” By building handwriting automaticity through Phase 3 drills, students reduce the cognitive load of letter formation, allowing them to focus on structural features, topic sentences, and logical cohesion.
- Precision in Editing: The curriculum emphasises “carefully checking writing for spelling, punctuation, and formatting errors.” These slides reinforce accuracy through Tier 2 vocabulary practice, helping students produce clean, legible drafts that are easier to edit and refine.
- Goal-Directed Writing: Aligns with the objective for students to “set and work towards specific writing goals.” This resource allows students to self-evaluate their handwriting speed and legibility as they prepare for the higher-volume writing demands of secondary school.
Our Handwriting Slides:
- Free Working Memory: By automating letter formation, students can focus their mental energy on creative ideas and composition.
- Boost Literacy Outcomes: Handwriting activates specific brain pathways that strengthen a student’s ability to decode (read) and spell.
- Provide Continuous Progress: Provides a consistent model that builds endurance and stamina for longer writing tasks.
