The Seeing Hawk – School Journal Level 4 October 2015

In The Seeing Hawk, a young boy flies a traditional kite made by his Koro, a matakite (visionary) who shares a mystical connection with the bird of prey seen at his birth. Guided by a chanting karakia, the boy experiences a transcendent vision where he becomes a soaring hawk, traveling through time to witness his grandfather’s birth in a wild, distant valley. This spiritual journey offers him a glimpse of his own future as an elder, ultimately returning him to the present with a new name and a deeper understanding of his ancestry.
