Description

This Note-Taking and Summarising resource has been designed to teach students to note take and summarise. Reading and viewing media to gain information is an important part of learning and researching, and this resource aims to assist teachers to teach this skill in a step-by-step way. This resource would be great for Year 5-8 students and the lower levels of high school.

This resource combines two methods to teach students to note take: The Cornell method and sketch-noting, or doodle notes.
This resource is provided in print version as well as PowerPoint and Google Slides. Students will need to use pen and paper if they wish to take stetch-notes.

Both US and British spelling is included in this resource.

This Note-Taking and Summarising Resource includes:
  • One Exemplar activity to demonstrate the note-taking process.
  • Two Guided Practice activities for teacher and students to complete the note-taking process together.
  • Six Independent Practice activities.
  • A mix of passages and video clips are included so students learn to take notes in both contexts.
  • A comprehensive teacher guide.
  • A note-taking graphic organizer.
This resource is set out using the gradual release of responsibility model (I do, we do, you do).
  • The Exemplar section (I do) of this resource is designed to be taught by the teacher, working through the exemplar pages and following the process as laid out.
  • The Guided Practice section (We do) provides both text and viewing opportunities for the teacher and students to work through the process together.
  • The Independent Practice sections (You do) provide three texts and three videos for students to practice the skill of note-taking and summarising independently. Each page provides a graphic organizer to help students organize their notes, as well as detailed instructions and steps to follow.

Please note; Access to Youtube will be necessary to access video links.
