This Monitoring for Understanding resource includes:

  • One ‘I Do’ passage and activity for the teacher to model how to self-monitor
  • Two ‘We Do’ passages and activities for the teacher and students to work through together
  • Eight ‘You Do’ passages and activities for students to complete independently
  • 13 reading prompt posters
  • Reminder bookmarks
This resource is provided in print version as well as a digital version for Google Classroom or Microsoft One Drive. We think this resource works best in Google Classroom due to the moveable pieces for annotation. This resource is suitable for both US and British spelling.

Why teach students how to self-monitor to check their understanding?
Self-monitoring for understanding requires students to engage in metacognition – to be aware of their own thinking and understanding as they are reading. The most crucial part of self-monitoring requires students to be able to recognise when they have stopped understanding and engage in strategies to be able to repair this understanding. A student who can monitor their reading and check for understanding is more likely to understand what they read (reading comprehension).

This resource is set out using the gradual release of responsibility model (I do, we do, you do).
  • The Exemplar section (I do) of this resource is designed to be taught by the teacher, working through the exemplar pages and following the process as laid out.
  • The Guided Practice section (We do) provides opportunities for the teacher and students to work through the process together.
  • The Independent Practice sections (You do) provide activities for students to practice the skill of self-monitoring independently.
