The Weird Zone – School Journal Level 3 November 2019

Following his recent separation, a father acts strangely and avoids preparing for the family’s annual Boxing Day camping trip because he is lonely and does not know how to put up a tent without his former partner. His children, Kahurangi and the narrator, realise he is struggling and help him set up camp at the beach. To solve the problem of their father feeling isolated in the “parents’ zone,” the children invite him to sleep in their tent, renaming it the “weird zone” to establish a new, inclusive family tradition.
