Bok Choy – School Journal Level 3 May 2015
Set in a New Zealand gold-mining town, the story follows young Jacob as he navigates the harsh racial prejudices of his community toward the local Chinese vegetable vendor, Ah Sum. When a fishing trip goes wrong and Jacob is swept away by a dangerous river current, he is rescued by the very man his neighbours treated with such disdain. As he recovers in Ah Sum’s humble hut, Jacob is forced to confront his own biases while catching a rare, personal glimpse into the life and sacrifices of the lonely immigrant.
