Our Year 7 Tier Two Vocabulary Explicit Teaching Slides are an engaging and highly effective resource for exploring word meanings. These slides work perfectly alongside your structured literacy programme, supporting students as they build a stronger vocabulary. Expanding vocabulary is critical to improving reading and writing skills, and research shows that students with larger vocabularies tend to excel academically, particularly in reading.
The refreshed New Zealand English Curriculum supports a structured literacy approach, including “Explicit teaching of new abstract and discipline-specific vocabulary to support comprehension” (p23).

These words come from the Academic Word List by Coxhead (2000). This word list was created by finding words that appeared frequently across academic literature.
